NAJAMATTHEWS

The pharmaceutical industry isn’t just overcharging you for life-saving medications — they’re spending record-breaking amounts of dark money to rig the entire system and silence anyone who dares to fight back.

While families across America are rationing insulin and choosing between rent and prescription drugs, Big Pharma has quietly built the most sophisticated influence operation across the country. And the numbers are staggering.

THE SHOCKING SCALE OF PHARMACEUTICAL POLITICAL SPENDING

In 2023 alone, pharmaceutical corporations poured $171 million into lobbying — more than any other industry. But that’s just what we can see.

Behind the scenes, the real manipulation happens through “dark money” groups that hide their donors while pushing Big Pharma’s agenda:

• $7.5 million to American Action Network, which spent millions attacking lawmakers who supported Medicare drug price negotiation.

• $2.7 million to Center Forward, a group that backed Democratic politicians who opposed their own party’s drug pricing reforms

• $52 million to other various political campaigns and nonprofits, patient groups, universities and other entities.

This has gone beyond lobbying — this is democracy for sale.

HOW DARK MONEY GROUPS MANIPULATE YOU

These organizations have innocent-sounding names, but their mission is clear: shift blame to everyone except the companies who actually set sky-high drug prices.

Here’s how they operate:

FAKE GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGNS: Groups like the above mobilize to flood lawmakers with calls and emails, creating the illusion of widespread public support for industry positions.

MEDIA MANIPULATION: Through sponsored content and strategic advertising, these front groups push misleading stories that blame insurance companies, “middlemen”, or government bureaucrats — anyone but the drug manufacturers themselves.

POLITICAL INFLUENCE: Dark money flows to candidates and groups that will block Medicare price negotiations, oppose drug importation programs, and maintain patent loopholes that keep generic competition off the market.

THE HUMAN COST OF PHARMACEUTICAL PROPAGANDA

While Big Pharma spends millions on influence campaigns, real people are dying:

• Americans are 3.5 times more likely to skip medications due to cost compared to patients in other developed countries.

• Prescription drug spending has increased 168% since 2001, far outpacing inflation.

• 1 in 4 Americans report difficulties affording their medications because of cost.

But when you hear pharmaceutical executives on TV, they’ll tell you the problem is “insurance companies” or “government red tape.” They’re lying.

The truth is simple: drug companies set the prices, and they’re using dark money to make sure no one stops them.

EXPOSING THE NETWORK OF DECEPTION

The pharmaceutical industry has created an entire ecosystem of misleading organizations:

“Patient Advocacy” Groups: Over 80% of major patient organizations receive pharmaceutical funding, but only 5% disclose the exact amounts. Many push industry talking points while claiming to represent patients.

Think Tanks and Research Organizations: Groups like the American Action Forum publish studies opposing drug price reforms — all while taking millions from PhRMA.

Astroturf Campaigns: Fake grassroots movements with names like Patient Rising sound like patient groups but are actually funded by drug manufacturers to oppose generic competition.

THEY’RE RIGGING THE RULES WHILE YOU SUFFER

Here’s what pharmaceutical companies have accomplished with their dark money machine:

• Blocked Medicare negotiations that could save billions in taxpayer dollars.

• Extended patent monopolies that keep affordable generics off the market for years longer than necessary.

• Weakened FDA oversight of drug pricing and market manipulation.

• Influenced medical research to downplay cost-effectiveness and overstate benefits.

Meanwhile, pharmaceutical executives received more than $499 million in compensation in 2024 alone — money that came directly from overcharging patients.

THE PHARMA ACCOUNTABILITY PROJECT IS FIGHTING BACK

Enough is enough. The Pharma Accountability Project exists to pull back the curtain on Big Pharma’s dark money operations and expose how they’re rigging the system against you.

We’re here to:

• Track the money flowing from pharmaceutical companies to political groups

• Expose the connections between industry funding and anti-patient policies

• Hold lawmakers accountable when they take pharma cash and vote against your interests

• Amplify the voices of patients being silenced by corporate propaganda

YOUR VOICE CAN BREAK THEIR MONOPOLY ON TRUTH

The pharmaceutical industry is counting on you to stay confused, distracted, and divided. They want you to blame insurance companies, the government, or anyone except the companies actually setting the prices.

Don’t let them fool you.

Every time you see a “study” opposing Medicare drug negotiations, ask: who funded it? Every time you hear about a “patient advocacy” campaign, ask: where does their money come from? Every time a politician votes against lowering drug prices, ask: how much did they take from Big Pharma?

Because the more Americans understand how the pharmaceutical industry manipulates our democracy, the closer we get to a system that puts patients before profits.

hey call themselves “patient advocacy groups.” They claim to fight for your health. They have righteous, inspiring names like “Voters for Cures” and “Patients Rising.”

But they’re not fighting for you — they’re fighting for Big Pharma’s billion-dollar profits.

Behind the compassionate language and emotional testimonials, these organizations are pharmaceutical industry fronts, designed to manipulate your emotions while protecting the very companies that are bankrupting American families with sky-high drug prices.

THE MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR DECEPTION

For years, pharmaceutical companies funneled millions to so-called “patient advocacy organizations” in the United State. But here’s the kicker: most Americans have no idea these groups are industry-funded.

A recent investigation revealed the shocking truth:

• Over 80% of major U.S. patient organizations receive pharmaceutical industry funding

• Only 5% of them publicly disclose how much money they receive

• Six pharmaceutical companies provided the vast majority of funding, concentrating influence in the hands of the biggest players

This isn’t charity — it’s strategic manipulation designed to silence authentic patient voices.

HOW FAKE PATIENT GROUPS MANIPULATE YOUR EMOTIONS

The pharmaceutical industry has weaponized human suffering to protect their profits. Here’s how they do it:

EMOTIONAL MANIPULATION: These groups feature real patients with devastating diseases, but they use their stories to argue against policies that would actually help them — like allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices.

MISLEADING RESEARCH: Industry-funded “patient organizations” regularly publish studies claiming that drug price reforms will “harm innovation” or “delay access to treatments” — conveniently ignoring that most pharmaceutical innovation is actually funded by taxpayers through NIH research grants.

ASTROTURFING CAMPAIGNS: They orchestrate fake grassroots movements, flooding social media and lawmakers’ offices with identical talking points that always, mysteriously, align with pharmaceutical company interests.

RECOGNIZING THE WARNING SIGNS

How can you tell if a “patient advocacy” organization is really fighting for you or for Big Pharma? Here are the red flags:

ANTI-REFORM MESSAGING: If a group consistently opposes Medicare drug negotiations, generic drug policies, or price transparency measures, ask yourself: who benefits from keeping drug prices high?

INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS: Check their leadership. Are board members current or former pharmaceutical executives? Do their staff have industry backgrounds?

MESSAGING ALIGNMENT: If their talking points sound identical to pharmaceutical industry press releases, that’s not a coincidence.

THE HUMAN COST OF FAKE ADVOCACY

While pharmaceutical companies spend millions creating fake patient voices, real patients are suffering:

• About three in ten adults don’t take prescribed medications due to cost.

• Insulin-dependent diabetics are dying because they can’t afford medication that costs less than $5 to manufacture.

• Cancer patients are choosing between life-saving treatments and financial ruin.

But when these real patient concerns reach lawmakers, they’re drowned out by the well-funded, professionally managed campaigns of industry front groups claiming to speak for patients while defending the very system that’s killing them.

DEMAND AUTHENTICITY IN PATIENT ADVOCACY

The next time you see a “patient advocacy” campaign opposing drug pricing reforms, ask the hard questions:

• Who is funding this organization?
• What is their position on Medicare drug price negotiations?
• Do their policies actually help patients or pharmaceutical companies?
• Are their leaders independent of industry influence?

Because until Americans can distinguish between real patient advocacy and pharmaceutical industry propaganda, the companies profiting from human suffering will continue to silence the voices of the people they’re supposed to serve.

Patient advocacy should be about patients — not pharmaceutical industry profits.

The AI Promise vs. Reality

Pharmaceutical companies love to talk about innovation. In recent years, Big Pharma has invested heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline drug discovery, clinical trials, and even supply chains. The promise? Faster, cheaper medicines.

Yet, for everyday Americans, drug prices are still climbing. If AI is saving these companies billions, why aren’t you seeing relief at the pharmacy counter? The answer has little to do with technology—and everything to do with dark money, pharma influence, and lobbying power.

The Hidden Cost of “Innovation”

AI is making drug development more efficient. Some estimates show it can cut research timelines by 30–40%. That should mean reduced costs for patients, right? Not exactly.

Here’s why:

• Pharmaceutical companies often outspend their R&D budgets with marketing and advertising. In 2023, for example, Pfizer spent $15 billion on marketing compared to $10 billion on research and development.

• Big Pharma advertising campaigns dominate television and online spaces, shaping public perception while drowning out scrutiny.

• Meanwhile, lobbying dollars flow steadily to Washington, ensuring that big pharma lobbying interests are protected—whether that means blocking price caps, influencing Medicare negotiations, or shifting blame onto middlemen or government regulators.

How Big Pharma Shapes the Narrative

The industry isn’t just selling drugs—it’s selling stories.

• Media manipulation: Major outlets rely on pharmaceutical advertising revenue, softening investigative reporting on drug pricing. Sponsored content often masquerades as “news.”

• Policy spin: Lobbyists redirect public anger by blaming high costs on others in the healthcare supply chain.

• Dark money campaigns: Nontransparent political donations keep policymakers aligned with pharma’s priorities, rather than patients’.

By controlling both the message and the money, Big Pharma ensures that even cost-saving technologies like AI don’t translate into consumer benefits.

What This Means for Patients

At the end of the day, it’s patients who pay the price. While AI accelerates breakthroughs, the financial benefits are captured by corporations, not communities. The cycle looks like this:

1. AI reduces internal costs.

2. Savings are redirected to advertising and lobbying, not lower prices.

3. Media narratives minimize accountability.

4. Patients remain stuck with unaffordable prescriptions.

Don’t Let the Savings Disappear

AI has the power to make medicines more affordable. But unless we confront pharma influence, dark money, and media manipulation, those savings will never reach patients.

Big Pharma wants you to believe high prices are inevitable. They’re not. But accountability starts with awareness—and action.

Why Americans Don’t See Drug Prices Drop

If you’ve ever wondered why prescription drug prices keep climbing—even as pharmaceutical companies rake in record profits—the answer is simpler than it seems: dark money and influence.

Despite what they’ll tell you, Big Pharma isn’t just spending on labs and clinical trials. They’re investing billions in lobbying, advertising, and subtle forms of media manipulation designed to silence reform efforts and control the public conversation.

Let’s break down how this machine works—and what it means for you.

The Dark Money Web of Big Pharma

Pharmaceutical companies operate in the shadows of Washington and the media. Their spending power is unmatched:

• Lobbying muscle: In 2024 alone, pharmaceutical companies spent a record $31 million on lobbying, with another $13 million in Q1 2025.

• Advertising dominance: Pfizer, for example, shelled out $15 billion on marketing in 2023—more than its $10 billion research budget.

• Media capture: Major outlets receive pharma sponsorships, subtly shaping editorial decisions and reducing hard-hitting investigative coverage.

This is the definition of dark money at work—funding that doesn’t just buy influence, but rewrites the rules of debate itself.

Pharma Influence in Policy and Media

Big Pharma lobbying ensures policies often tilt toward corporate profits, not patient needs. The playbook includes:

1. Shaping narratives: Pharma ads dominate television, magazines, and digital platforms, promoting miracle cures while downplaying risks.

2. Blame-shifting: Industry talking points frequently target Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and insurers—deflecting attention from Big Pharma’s own role in high drug costs.

3. Regulatory capture: By funding “independent” research groups and patient coalitions, pharmaceutical companies make their talking points appear grassroots.

The result? A silenced reform movement and a public misled about why their drug bills keep rising.

Big Pharma Advertising = Media Manipulation

The United States is one of only two countries in the world that allows direct-to-consumer drug advertising. That creates two big problems:

• Consumers as targets: Ads create demand for expensive brand-name drugs that may not be medically necessary.

• Newsrooms under pressure: When pharmaceutical companies are among the top ad buyers, networks are less likely to run stories critical of them.

This blurring of journalism and advertising is not accidental—it’s part of a strategy to use media manipulation to control the public narrative.

The Bottom Line

Big Pharma’s influence isn’t just about profits. It’s about controlling what we see, hear, and believe about our healthcare system. If we want real reform, we need to strip away the dark money shielding pharmaceutical companies from accountability.
